Growing is a constant challenge. There’s a lot to keep track of, from nutrient levels and growth cycles to the terminology of growing itself. Some concepts are as old as agriculture itself, while others are at the cutting edge of innovation. Getting a handle on them is an important step on the road to mastery. That’s why we’ve set up this glossary. You’ll find the most important grow-related terms right here, listed from A to Z for your convenience.
A base nutrient. Mills Basis A and B together contain the 12 essential macro and micro nutrients for the complete growth cycle. See Basis B for more info.

A cutting of the motherplant, which contains the same profile.
Adding extra CO2 will cause plants to grow bigger under high temperatures (> 33 °C).
Mills Cocopeat is a non-fertilized substrate mix of cocopeat and fibres, for the perfect balance between moisture and air.
Holes in the pot to capture excessive water.
The process of drying of removing water from the outer layers of the flower. The optimal circumstances are a dark room with a temperature of 18 °C.
Electric Conductivity is the capacity that liquids have of transporting electricity.
Nutrients containing necessary elements to supply plants with.
The stage where plants begin to produce their flowers. Also known as fruiting or blooming stage.
Fruit or buds being formed on the plant.
The DNA of a plant, formed by the mother and father.
The main root out of a seed. Best results guaranteed in moist environments at 24 °C.
The perfect time to harvest can be observed by checking the trichomes, with a magnifier/microscope >65x. See ‘trichomes’ in the Glossary for more info.
A plant that makes both female flowers and male balls with pollen, which results in seeds in the flowers.
Our extra concentrated nutrient line with double the amount of nutrition compared to our regular products.
The percentage of moist in the air.
A soilless method of growing, using water as the primary medium.
An indoor grow is optimal because of the circumstances that indoor provides, which also include being able to influence the start of the bloom stage.
The process of providing controlled amounts of water to assist an optimal grow.
The distance between the light source and the top of the plants, for HPS light the best distance is 10% in cm, of the watts, so 400W=40cm, 600W=60cm.
The best light color for plants in the vegetative phase is around 6500 Kelvin. For the blooming phase, the optimal light color around 2700 Kelvin.
Our lightmix contains different types of peat, peat moss fiber, structure mix and perlite and is pre-fertilized at an EC between 1.2 – 1.4
The light used for the growth of plants, like the sun, HPS light and LED light.
Low Stress Training, or LST, is a training method in which you bend and tie the stems of the plants, to assist them to grow more efficiently and productively.
Large amount of elements like nitrogen, phosphor, kalium/potassium ( NPK ), magnesium and calcium, which the plants need in order to grow effectively.
The kind of substrate where the plans develop their root system.
Small amounts of elements like iron, boron, manganese and molybdenum that assist in growing effectively.
Non-organic materials, like iron, copper, zinc, calcium and potassium.
The EC value is measured in MS/cm (milliSiemens per linear centimeter).
NPK stands for Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium, three major nutrients that plants need to live and grow.
Check out the nutrient calculator for all Mills products here, which tells you exactly how much product to use at each stage of the growth cycle.

Liquid or solid macro and micro elements, the food that plants need to grow.
The Mills 100% Organic + Vegan nutrients line, in the signature green bottles.
Mills organic soil is non-fertilized and contains black and white peat.
Growing outdoors with the sun as the light source.
Volcanic rock/lava blown up by heat to popcorn like pebbles, which can be added to the soil to provide more air.
The pH measures the acidity of the water. The best pH ranges for growing on soil is between 6.0 – 6.5. For growing on cocos or hydro, the best pH range is between 5.5 – 6.0
pH- Mills is a Mills product specifically developed to lower the pH value of the water.
pH+ Mills is a product specifically developed to raise the pH value of the water.
Phosphor, one of the 3 main macro elements (NPK: Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium).
Mills Ultimate PK is developed to boost the fruit for the max yield. Start using PK at week 5 of the blooming phase.
Kalium / Potassium. (One of the 3 main macro elements NPP (Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium)).
Re-vegging is a technique used to return a harvested plant to its vegetative stage, allowing for a second growth cycle and potential additional yield from the same plant.
Reverse Osmosis is the use of a filter to get clean water without minerals.
A Dutch quality certification for organic substrates.
Scrogg or Scrogging is a high-efficiency plant training technique that uses a stable net or screen suspended above the plant canopy. As the branches grow through the net, each one is carefully bent and tied down to the screen. This helps spread out the plant’s structure horizontally, creating an even canopy where all flowering sites receive equal light.
A seedling is a plant raised from seed.
Sea of Green (SOG) is a high-density growing technique that maximises yields by cultivating many small plants per square metre. Ideal for fast turnover and limited space.
Mills Start-R is developed for plants in the vegetative phase and contains 2 different types of nitrogen for extremely fast rooting.

The vegetative stage is the phase in a plant’s life cycle focused on structural growth and developing stems, leaves, and roots before any flowers or fruits appear. During this stage, plants require more nitrogen, stable lighting, and consistent watering to build a strong foundation for the bloom phase.
